This is one of the main things I advocate to all my patients. It’s a “low-hanging fruit” intervention that can easily be implemented and has been proven to decrease all-causes of death, cardiovascular disease, lower rates of depression, and even lower pain levels. Studies show gradually increasing step count past 5000 steps per day can accomplish this.
10,000 is the goal most people think is “optimal”. Although there is no research to prove this is a magic number it can be a good goal to aim for. At MINIMUM, hit 5000 steps today and increase GRADUALLY from there. Make it a goal to add 250-500 more steps per day each week until you hit a sustainable goal.
